Scanning reinforcement (rebars) and measuring concrete cover before laser grinding is not optional—it is a risk-control step that directly affects structural integrity, equipment safety, and the quality of the finished floor.
it prevents structural damage. Reinforcement is the load-carrying skeleton of the slab. If grinding reduces the cover too much or exposes steel, you locally reduce protection against corrosion and may weaken the section. In industrial floors, even small reductions in cover over wide areas can accelerate deterioration under traffic and moisture.
It defines the safe grinding depth. Laser grinding is highly precise and can remove millimeters consistently across large areas. Without prior scanning, you are effectively grinding “blind.” Cover measurements allow you to set a maximum removal depth so you do not intersect top reinforcement, mesh, or fibers. This is especially critical in thin slabs or floors with variable cover due to poor placement or finishing.
It avoids hitting steel, which protects both the machine and the surface finish. Contact between grinding heads and rebars can cause tool damage, vibration, loss of flatness control, and surface tearing. Once steel is exposed, you also create future rust staining and bond issues for coatings.
The operator moves the device’s search head across the concrete surface in a systematic pattern. When the instrument detects reinforcement, the head is rotated to find the position where the electromagnetic disturbance is strongest. At this point, the device provides a reading of the cover depth, assuming the bar size is known.
