Perfector Floor

Surface Gloss Test

What Is Surface Gloss Test

This test evaluates how reflective or shiny a floor surface is. The measurement is expressed in gloss units (GU), which quantify how much light is reflected from the surface. In addition to gloss, the same equipment can also assess haze and reflectance at different measurement angles.

Why To Check Surface Gloss

Surface reflectivity can directly affect the performance of automated systems. In warehouses that use mobile robots, navigation depends on reading barcode markers placed on the floor. If the surface reflects too much light, it can interfere with the sensors and reduce reading accuracy, leading to operational delays. In other environments, such as showrooms or retail spaces, gloss is important for visual appearance and must meet specific aesthetic expectations.

How To Check Surface Gloss

An optical device called a gloss meter is used. The instrument is placed on the floor surface and projects light at defined angles. The reflected light is then measured and converted into gloss units. Measurements are typically taken at angles of 20°, 60°, and 85°, depending on the surface characteristics. Multiple readings can be collected across different areas to build a complete understanding of surface conditions.
